Art DepartmentArt classes offered at South Vigo High school include basic classes, such as 2D Basic Art I and Drawing I that can be taken alone, or to provide background for further study in areas such as Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture and various Advanced Art courses offered. Advanced Art students work on an independent study basis and may choose to develop a portfolio for use in applying for college art scholarships as well as Studio Art Advanced Placement. Numerous former South Art students have received significant scholarships at colleges, universities and art schools based on their high school art portfolio. Classes in western and non-western Art History are also offered, exploring art and its impact on society. Art History is taught as a hands-on-experience, with students working with the media and styles they learn about. Opportunities exist, throughout the school year for students to exhibit and compete with their art work. Students especially look forward to The Annual Student Art Exhibit held each spring at the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute.
