The Music Theory & Composition class is an elective course through the ISU College Challenge Program (Music 101-3 semester hours). The course deals with all structures of music both basic and complex. The students have experience in writing compositions and analyzing musical form. [Back]

Students must participate in Advanced Concert Band (Marching Band) and follow all procedures of attendance, rehearsals, and performances specified for the Patriot Brigade. Camp is included. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. This class is open to music students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Students must participate in another band class. Students will study advanced aspects of percussion performance. Participation in Solo & Ensemble Contest is required, as well as attendance at all performances and extra rehearsals. Students should take both terms; a student who does not take term 2 will need the permission of the instructor to take term 3. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Beginning Concert Band is composed of students from grades 9, 10, 11, & 12. Membership is by audition only which will be held each spring prior to the following school year. Members must display a good understanding and performance of rhythm and tone production. The band will perform at several concerts during the school year, including the Concert Band Contest and the Solo & Ensemble Contest in the spring. Attendance is required at all performances and extra rehearsals. Students should take all three terms. However, a student who does not take term 1, with permission of the instructor, may take terms 2 and/or 3. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. The Intermediate Concert Band is composed of students from grades 9, 10, 11, & 12. Placement is determined by auditions in the spring prior to the following school year and the previous band director’s recommendation. The band will perform at several concerts during the school year including the Concert Band Contest and the Solo & Ensemble Contest in the spring. Attendance is required at all performances and extra rehearsals. Students should take all three terms. However a student who does not take term 1, with permission of the instructor, may take terms 2 and/or 3. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Membership is by audition only, which will be held each spring prior to the following school year. The band will perform at several concerts during the school year including the Concert Band Contest and the Solo & Ensemble Contest in the spring. Attendance is required at all performances and extra rehearsals. Students should take all 3 terms. JAZZ ENSEMBLE
(Jazz Improvisation)

Prerequisite: Membership by Audition

This class is open to advanced instrumentalists of all types wishing to learn how to improvise. Winds and
percussionists must be enrolled in a concert band. Class members will study and transcribe solos of jazz masters past and present, learn the scales and harmonies unique to jazz, and improvise to jazz standards in idioms like swing, blues, Latin, funk, and rock. Attendance is required at all performances and extra rehearsals. Jazz Ensemble (Jazz Band) is a performing organization designed for the well trained musician. This organization performs at various programs and concerts throughout the school year. Attendance is required at all performances and extra rehearsals. Students should take all three terms. However, a student who does not take term 1, with permission of the instructor, may take terms 2 and/or 3. Prerequisite: Middle school or private instructional experience in playing a stringed instrument.

Beginning Orchestra is composed of students from grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 who can demonstrate a basic proficiency on a stringed instrument. This training ensemble will perform at major concerts during the school year. Members will be required to participate in ISSMA solo and ensemble contest. Extra rehearsals and performances will be required. No audition is required. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Advanced Orchestra is a select ensemble of students from grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Membership in this ensemble is based on musical ability. The ensemble will perform chamber, string, and/or full orchestra literature at all major concerts and recitals. Members will be required to participate in ISSMA solo and ensemble contest, organizational contest, and various community functions. Extra rehearsals and performances will be required. Students are required to take at least 2 trimesters. However, a student who does not take term 1, with permission of the instructor,
may take term 2 and/or 3. Students are required to purchase performance attire. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Besides many concerts and performances, the Intermediate Chorus also participates in the Spring Contests and Spring Concert Tours. Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances. BASKETBALL BAND

The Basketball Band is open to all students grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 who are currently enrolled in a music class. Membership is by audition in the fall following Marching Band. The organization plays for all boy’s home basketball games. Students are required to purchase a uniform band shirt. [Back]

ADVANCED CONCERT BAND
(Marching Band / Summer Music)

Prerequisite: Membership in any music class and by audition

This organization strives for excellence in performance at all public appearances such as football half-time shows, parades, and marching competitions. Advanced Concert Band is open to students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 who are currently enrolled in a music class. Students must sign up for Advanced Concert Band in the spring and attend all rehearsals and performances including band camp in the summer. Marching band is a volunteer organization. This group represents Terre Haute North High School locally as well as nationally, participating once every three years in a national parade or festival. All rehearsals and performances are required. The guard will be included with this group in the Music Department and will receive the same credit as those in Advanced Concert Band (Marching Band). Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. The Choral Chamber Ensemble consists of 18-24 singers from all grades. The performer must show a high proficiency of singing and musical skills and exhibit an interest in performing madrigals and chansons from the Renaissance through 20th Century in its original language. Besides many concerts, performances, and an annual Christmas dinner, the Choral Chamber Ensemble also participates in Spring Contest. Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances. Students are provided with a balanced comprehensive study of music which develops skills in the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains. Activities are designed to develop elements of musicianship which will include some or all of the following: (1) tone production, (2) technical skills, (3) intonation, (4) music reading skills, (5) listening skills, (6) analyzing music, and (7) studying historically significant styles of literature.
