Although the study of Latin offers benefits to all, it is especially recommended for students planning careers in medicine, law, science, and the humanities. The basic structure of the Latin language is introduced through listening to, reading, writing, pronouncing, and mimicking the language. Students acquire vocabulary, which conveys elementary Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes—all of which are strongly emphasized for the PSAT, SAT, and/or ACT and weekly vocabulary tests both in Latin and English classes. Parts of speech, types of sentences, and grammatical structures are studied to assist students not only with their understanding of Latin but also to assist them in English. Comparisons, contrasts, congruencies, and parallelisms are constantly emphasized. Through individual projects and daily readings, students are introduced to basic Roman history, culture, daily life, and mythology. Travel to Italy and Greece is encouraged. Students also sample sections of the National Latin Exam. [Back]
