In Vigo County, school nurses are assigned specific schools. The nurse can be reached through their assigned school or you can call their main office 462-4465. Also, there is a health assistant, trained in first aid, present in every building for a portion of every day.

The school nurses participate in mandatory vision, modified clinical technique vision screening, scoliosis screening and immunization review. They also present AIDS, Universal precautions, and OSHA Standards inservices for all employees. They conduct Hepatitis B immunization clinics to comply with OSHA regulations.

Collaboration with community agencies is an integral part of school nurse activities. Referrals for health related needs are made to various community agencies, philanthropic organizations, physicians and dentists.

School nurses work closely with school staff, health assistants, community agencies, health disciplines and families in promoting, maintaining and delivering optimum health services to Vigo County students.
