The
Vigo County School Corporation utilizes an automated
system to register employee absences and assign substitutes
from 5:30 a.m. on the days substitutes are required.
Advance assignments are made through evening calls
from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.. These calls are made
up to two (2) weeks before the scheduled absence.
When
teachers call in absences they may utilize one of three
options to secure a needed substitute.
They
may "request" a particular substitute in which
case the system will call that person (if available)
every
thirty (30) minutes during call out time until
they accept or decline the position. If that
substitute has not been reached by 9:00 p.m.
on the evening
before the absence the system will abandon
the request
and
start calling other qualified substitutes from
the pool. It will call until a substitute is
secured or all lists are exhausted.
The teacher may choose to let the SubFinder System
locate a substitute without making a request for a particular substitute. The
teacher may also prearrange a substitute for the absence. In that case the
teacher puts in the absence and the substitute but the system does not call
out in this instance. The system only makes a record of the job since the substitute
already knows about it.
When a substitute
is called by the system he/she interacts with a telephone keypad (touch-tone).
Training is provided as part of substitute pre-service training. Briefly, the
substitute may accept, decline, or indicate he/she wants no more calls during
the current calling period. If the substitute declines he/she may be called
for subsequent absences in that calling period.
The
system also allows substitutes to inquire about jobs for which they are qualified.
In order to do this the substitute calls into the system and indicate he/she
wishes to know if such jobs are available. Jobs for which the substitute is
qualified will be offered to the substitute.
When
a substitute has accepted a job he/she will be given a job number. The substitute
records this number and reports it when arriving for the assignment at the
school. If the substitute later needs to inquire about or cancel the job the
number will be necessary.
Contact lists
in the system are arranged in the following order: Unless otherwise specified
by individual school. Individuals
holding a valid Indiana teaching license. (by appropriate subject area)
Individuals
holding a valid substitute certificate . (by area of interest
and ability)
All
substitutes certified for level needed.
All
substitutes regardless of level.
Every
attempt will be made to provide the absent teacher with a substitute whose
educational credentials can most effectively meet the needs of the students. For
