Substitute Teacher Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the requirements to be a substitute teacher?

  • A Limited Criminal History (see below for details)
  • 60 Credit Hours
  • Current Indiana Teaching License or Substitute Teaching License
  • Official Transcript Of Grades
  • Vigo County School Corporation Application
  • Application For Substitute Teaching License (if needed)
  • Application For Teachers' Retirement Fund
  • Tax Form W4 and WH4 Filled out.
  • 2 hour pre-service training class
  • Cashier's check or money order for $15.00 (Made out to the State of Indiana)
  • A Photo ID Badge is required (it is furnished for you free of charge)
The 1997 Indiana General Assembly enacted legislation requiring all applicants for licensure or relicensure to submit limited criminal history information to the Indiana Professional Standards Board. The effective date is July 1, 1997, no exceptions. The wording of the statute indicates that each time a person submits an application for a license, he/she is an "applicant"and must present an updated criminal history. You will be pleased to learn that a finger print record is no longer required. For more details please call the Substitute Teaching Office at 812-462-4052.

Q: What will I be paid as a substitute teacher?

Pay is $58.00 per day and $29.00 per half day. Retired Indiana teachers (defined as a participant in T.R.F. receiving retirement benefits) will be paid $75.00 per day, and $37.50 per half day of service when teaching within their area of certification.

Q: Where can I pick up and application?

A Substitute Teaching packet may be picked up at the reception desk of the Vigo County School Corporation's main office at 686 Wabash, in Terre Haute. The offices are open from 7:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday.

Q: Do I have to have any training to become a substitute teacher?
A pre-service training class is a requirement for all Substitutes. The classes will be held at the Administration Building, 686 Wabash Ave., from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM and are usually the Tuesday after the School Board meeting but not always. Please call the office the day before to confirm the meeting date before you come. Take your substitute teaching handbook with you to class. If you have any questions please call 812-462-4052.
