Analytical Chemistry Class Syllabus

Instructor: Mr. McPheeters

Rm. 148

This course is designed to continue the study of fundamental principles in chemistry.  There is an emphasis on self-discovery learning through student designed and implemented laboratory investigations.

Text:                 Brown , LeMay & Bursten; “Chemistry: The Central Science.” 10th ed. Prentice

Hall.  2006.

Late Work:       No late work will be accepted.  Any assignments not turned in on time will result in a

0 for that assignment.  Furthermore, students that are present for any part of the school day are responsible for turning in any assignments due that day.  Failure to submit assignments prior to leaving early or upon late arrival will result in a zero for that assignment.

Absences:         Students who are absent from school are responsible for obtaining any assignments

given during their absence. Absences are allowed three days to turn in missed assignments, and one week to make up missed exams (after school only).  Any assignments given prior to the day absent, due on day absent will be due on the first day back.  Failure to do so will result in a 0 grade for the assignment.

Tardiness:         You will be allowed to be tardy once per trimester without penalty.  Thereafter, each

tardy will be met with school discipline.

Required          1” three ring (binder clearly divided into five sections: Reference, Study Skills

Materials:         Reading/Class Notes, Labs, and Course Work) Loose-leaf paper for binder (wide or college ruled), Scientific Calculator (graphing calculator not required), Pencil (mandatory).  It may be useful to have a small jump drive for saving lab data and working at home.

Cheating:          Any attempt or act of cheating will result in a 0 grade for the assignment.  Furthermore, a

referral of class suspension, for the period of one day, will be given to the Dean.  Any assignments missed during the one-day suspension will receive a 0 grade.

Grading:           Grading is compiled on a point system.  Each assignment will be worth a set number of points.  At the end of the grading period, all points will be added and divided by the total number of points possible to determine your letter grade.

* Neatness counts on all work turned in.  If work is not legible, it will be returned with a 0 grade.

Grading scale

            A         90% -100%

            B          80% - 88%

            C         70% - 79%

            D         60% -69%

            F          59% and lower

Evaluations:      Points will be awarded for a collection of:

·        Classroom Organization – notebooks will be turned in periodically to asses your organizational skills (approximately 5% of grade)

·        Assignments – You will be assigned both classroom and homework assignments which may or may not be collected (approximately 20% of grade).

·        Quizzes – there will unit quizzes designed to evaluate your level of mastery for each unit (approximately 25% of grade).

·        Lab Investigations – You will be evaluated on the performance and explanation of central concepts involved in each laboratory activity (approximately 50% of grade).

College             Second year chemistry provides students at THN the opportunity to earn 8 credits

Challenge:         hours in chemistry from ISU through the College Challenge Program.  Specifically, the General, Organic and Biochemistry course (Chem. 103, 103L, 104, and 104L) offered through the chemistry Department at ISU.  The GOB course would count as either general ed. credits for non-science majors or the required chemistry component for most nursing, sports medicine and safety management programs to name a few.  If you elect to enroll in the College Challenge program, you must complete Analytical Chemistry with a 70% or higher cumulative grade.  This will earn you credit for Chem. 103 and 103L.  To earn Chem. 104 and 104L credits, you must take both Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry using your GPA from Biochemistry to determine your Chem. 104/L grade.  Organic is a prerequisite and must be taken before Biochemistry.  Remember the College Challenge program is not free.  You will enroll in ISU and PAY tuition.  I am simply the ISU faculty member that instructs the course.
