The Honey Creek Science Fair was held on Feb. 16th. Several students entered projects and spent many hours investigating their project questions. There were 3 Divisions: Behavioral Science, Physical Science, and Life Science. This was a good year for Honey Creek’s Science Fair.  Many of the projects will go to Regionals.

Behavioral Science Division
Ella Hardwick was the 2nd place runner up.   For her project she made a list of different colored words and then recorded which colors were remembered the most.
The 1st place Behavioral Science Division winner was Kassidy Merk.  She recorded fast food orders and how many were correct or incorrect based on the workers’ wages.

Physical Science Division
Benjamin Sellers was the 2nd place runners-up.  He tested 5 different baseball pitches to see how Pitch Grip Affects Velocity.
The 1st place Physical Science Division winners were Crystal Wang and Ethan He.  They folded paper into columns for supports, then tested their strength using weights.

Life Science Division
Audric Martin and Xzavion Miller were the 2nd place runners-up.  They studied which homemade water filter is best.
Ayma Rizwan was the 1st place Life Science Division winner.  She studied the most energy-efficient way to preserve food for the astronauts that requires no electricity.

Science Bowl
On Saturday February 19th, seven Honey Creek students competed in the National Science Bowl Regional Competition. They competed against students from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Both teams worked hard, and Team 1 placed 6th in the region.

The following students competed:
Shamyant Boda
Ayush Bhattacharyya
Ethan He
Jeffrey Chen
Robi Li
Noah Priece
Ainsley Greig

Students in Mrs. Schoffstall’s class used books about the planets to complete research projects. They typed facts into Google Docs and printed them along with a picture of their planet to make a poster. Each student worked on two planets, one inner planet and one outer planet. Special thanks to our media center specialist Mrs. Webb and all the elementary schools (Dixie Bee, Rio Grande, Riley, Hoosier Prairie, Lost Creek) that lent us books to do the research!

The Comic Club (formerly known as Cartoon Club) met during Advisory with the goal of each member creating his/her own comic to put into a book.  Each member will receive a book, and several copies will be available in the media center for students to read.  The media center has copies of all the clubs’ books from over the years.

Members this year were Toni Adeagbo, Joey Behnke, Ayush Bhattacharyya, Marlee Herring, Maddyn Hutchins, Jolee Powers, Jordyn Rittenberg, Manuel Ruiz, Aleyah Smith, Alex Snowden, and Jazmine Topete.

Students explored all areas of creating a comic:  character development, facial expressions, writing with attention to the beginning, middle, and end, panel arrangements, use of text, and more.  The group used the media center white board to work on sequencing of ideas and also used comic story starters with the first panel in place to which they added a second panel and then passed their pages around the table with each student adding to the story.

The Comic Club originated as a part of media specialist Mrs. Webb’s Lilly Teacher Creativity Grant in 2015.  The grant allowed her to attend workshops at the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont during the summer.  While there, she created her own book and worked on activities for her students.

Magic Milk in Science Class https://web.vigoschools.org/honey-creek/blog/2021/12/14/magic-milk-in-science-class/ Wed, 15 Dec 2021 02:13:51 +0000 https://web.vigoschools.org/honey-creek/?p=10263 The post Magic Milk in Science Class appeared first on Honey Creek.

Mrs. Shannon Giles gave her 7th grade science students a challenge.  Their assignment was to see what happened to milk when dish soap was added.

She said, “Milk is made up of minerals, proteins, and fats. Proteins and fats are susceptible to changes. When the dish soap is added to the milk, those molecules run around and try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk.

You wouldn’t see this without the food coloring! The food coloring looks like fireworks because it’s getting bumped around!

The soap heads for the fats creating the cool bursting of color. When there is no more movement, all the fat molecules have been found. Are there any more hiding?”

The classes had some incredible work to show!

Did you ever want to throw a pie at a teacher?  The kids at Honey Creek got that chance on Nov. 23rd at an assembly at the end of the day.  Students bought a chance to “pie a teacher” for $1.00.  The fundraiser ended up collecting around $100.00 for student activities.

Among the teachers representing different teaching areas, those with top money collected were Mrs. Teri Bennett, Mr. Paul Bennett, and Mrs. Melissa Hopper who graciously agreed to be “pied”!

When students’ names were drawn, Jena Gormong, Chloe Dawson, and Korbin Gifford received the honor of pie-ing their teachers.

The event ended with a mother/son pie fight between Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Paul Bennett.
