MONDAY, 12, 2003
MINUTES
A Regular meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the
Vigo County School Corporation, Vigo County, Indiana, was held at the
Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana, on the 12th
day of May 2003, at 7:00 P.M.
The following Board Members were present: Mr. Michael Tom, Mr. Mel Burks, Mr. Gene
Shike, Mr. Guille Cox, Dr. Joseph Minnis, and Mr. Kenneth Schuster.
Pledge of Allegiance
Mr. Burks lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Special Recognition
Mr. Thornton recognized Mrs. Donna Wilson, Accounting Supervisor/Deputy Treasurer, for the Vigo County School Corporation, and noted that Mrs. Wilson has been selected as the Indiana Association of School Business Officials Region 7 Treasurer of the Year. Mr. Thornton stated that Mrs. Wilson would be honored at the Indiana Association of School Business Officials Annual Meeting in South Bend this month.
Spotlight
Mrs. Cinda Taylor, Title I Coordinator, introduced Mr. Paul Allen and Mrs. Polly Lee, Reading Recovery teacher leaders. Mr. Allen and Mrs. Lee presented certificates to Reading Recovery teachers.

Consent Agenda
Mr. Cox moved, and Mr. Schuster seconded approval of the Consent Agenda. The motion passed unanimously.
The following Consent Agenda items were approved:

b. Permission to Purchase Equipment from Extra-Curricular Funds

Discussion
Used and Obsolete Textbooks
Mr. Azar requested that the Board of School Trustees grant permission to advertise for the sale of used books. He noted that used book companies who have expressed interest would be mailed an invitation to bid on the used books. Mr. Azar stated that revenue generated by the sale would be placed in the Textbook Fund.
Mr. Shike moved for approval of the sale of used books. Mr. Tom seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
New Business
Personnel Report
Mr. Tanoos requested approval of the Personnel Report.
Mr. Shike moved for approval of the Personnel Report. Mr. Burks seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Purchase of Career Technology
Mr. Tanoos reported that bids were opened on April 21, 2003 for Career Technology, and requested permission for contracts to be awarded to eight (8) vendors for a total cost of $30,747.23. The following vendors received contracts: Alternative View, Brodhead Garrett, K-Log, Long’s Electronics, Nasco, Paxton Patterson, Quill, and Rapid Reproduction.
Advanced Placement Social Studies Textbook Adoption
Mr. Tanoos requested approval of the Advanced Placement Social Studies textbooks. He commented that all advanced placement social studies teachers have had the opportunity to preview and evaluate the textbooks.
Mr. Burks moved for approval. Mr. Tom seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Title I School Improvement Grants
Mr. Tanoos requested approval for six School Improvement Grants. The Title I schools notified as grant recipients are: DeVaney Elementary School, Fuqua Elementary School, Davis Park Elementary School, Farrington Grove Elementary School, Meadows Elementary School, and Ouabache Elementary School.
Mr. Schuster moved for approval. Mr. Shike seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Second Call for
Citizens Comments
Comments were received from Marian Ramsey Ford, Executive Director of the Vigo County Taxpayers Association.
Information and Proposals from Board Members
Dr. Minnis commended the students and staff involved with the Building Trades program.
Mr. Tom said he noticed a large recall of Carpenter buses and asked if the school corporation is involved. Mr. Danner replied that the Vigo County School Corporation does not have Carpenter buses.
Mr. Schuster commended the third grade students and staff at Rio Grande Elementary school for the excellent program he attended recently at the school.
Dr. Minnis commended those involved with planning the Transportation banquet that was held this month.
Mr. Cox commended West Vigo High School as Knowledge Master State Champions for the second time. He also commended the students in Vigo County on their ISTEP scores. He stated that school corporations in the state were ranked by student population, and Vigo County placed very well.
Mr. Burks commented that he attended an excellent diversity program at Davis Park Elementary School, which also involved students from other schools. He commended Mrs. Darlene Wilford for organizing the program.
Mr. Tanoos commented that Honey Creek Middle School was the only school in the Vigo County School Corporation that received damage due to the storm that went through the area Saturday. He commended Mr. Danner and his staff for getting our properties cleared after the storm.
