M I N U T E S
A meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the Vigo County School Corporation was held at the Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana, on the 11th day of April 2005 at 7:00 P.M.
The following Board Members were present: Mr. Gene Shike, Mr. Jack Lower, Mr. Guille Cox, Dr. Joseph Minnis, Mr. Paul Lockhart, Mr. Michael Tom, and Mr. Mel Burks.
Pledge of Allegiance
Mr. Gene Shike led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Superintendent Tanoos
Mr. Tanoos presented a brief overview of the activities and projects that took place during the last two weeks.
First Call for Citizen Comments
No comments were received.
Consent Agenda
Mr. Burks moved for approval of the Consent Agenda. Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion. Mr. Shike, Mr. Lower, Mr. Cox, Mr. Lockhart, Mr. Tom and Mr. Burks voted “yes.” Dr. Minnis voted “yes” on all items except item #2. He “abstained” on item #2.
The following Consent Agenda items were approved:

Discussion
Science Textbook Adoption
Mr. Rex Ireland presented the state list for the 2004-2005 science textbook adoption, and noted that all elementary, middle school and high school science teachers had the opportunity to preview and evaluate them. He noted that parents have also been invited to preview and evaluate the books.
This item will be brought back to the Board for approval at the next regularly scheduled Board meeting.
Special Education Science Textbook Adoption
Mrs. Kathy Walker commented that the special education science adoption committee has reviewed the science standards and has selected textbooks for students with mild disabilities.
She noted that all special education teachers and parents were given the opportunity to review and evaluate the textbooks.
Following discussion, it was decided that this item would be brought back for Board approval at the next regularly scheduled Board Meeting.
New Business
Personnel Report
Mr. Tanoos presented the Personnel Report for approval.
Mr. Shike moved for approval of the Personnel Report. Dr. Minnis seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Permission to Seek a Temporary Loan
Mr. Thornton requested approval to seek a temporary loan in the amount not to exceed five million, five hundred thousand dollars in order to meet the payrolls and other expenses for the General Fund with timely payments. He noted that the deficit is a result of the delay in state support payments scheduled for January, plus the reduction in the monthly state payments caused by the state budget deficit. The proposed borrowing would be in the form of tuition support anticipation warrants.
Following discussion, Mr. Tom moved for approval. Mr. Burks seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Deming Elementary Comprehensive School Grant
Mr. Tanoos reported that Deming Elementary School is requesting approval for a $45,000.00 Comprehensive School Reform Supplementary Grant to enhance their present efforts.
Mr. Lower moved for approval. Mr. Shike seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
West Vigo High School Project Aspire
Mr. Tanoos noted that West Vigo High School is requesting approval to receive $1,000.00 annually to support students taking challenging Advanced Placement classes. This grant is offered as part of their participation in the Project Aspire Grant through the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities.
Mr. Shike moved for approval. Dr. Minnis seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Proposals from Board Members
Mr. Shike commented that the Policy Handbook Committee has completed their meetings and are in hopes of bringing their work to the next Board Meeting.
Mr. Tanoos thanked Deputy Frank Shahadey and Frank Fennell for keeping our parking lot available for the meeting tonight due to a concert being held at I.S.U.
Information Items
1. Congratulations to the Terre Haute South Science Department. At the State Science
Symposium, South took three of the five top spots and both spots in the Regional
Science Fair.
2. Congratulations to the talents of the music students and the Music Department at
Woodrow Wilson Middle School. The music students received Gold ratings for
their performances at the ISSMA auditions at Terre Haute North Vigo High
School.
3. Congratulations to Terre Haute South Vigo High School science students and the
Science Department. The South Science Bowl placed third in their Regional at
ISU on February 5th. The Varsity Jets team was overall champion and Division 7
Champion for the 6th year in a row. The Junior Varsity Jets team was JV Champion
for the 6th year in a row also. The Science Olympiad team placed third in their
Regional on February 19th and will now to on to State competition.
