M I N U T E S

 

 

A meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the Vigo County School Corporation was held at the Vigo County School Corporation Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 7:00 P.M.

 

The following Board Members were present:  Mr. Guille Cox, Dr. Joseph Minnis,

Mr. Paul Lockhart, Ms. Alpa Patel, Mr. Mel Burks, Mr. Gene Shike, and Mrs. Jackie

Lower.

 

Pledge of Allegiance

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Guille Cox.

 

Special Presentation

 

CHANCES for Indiana Youth and the Voices Club of West Vigo High School presented the Gary Sandifer Award Plaque to the Vigo County School Corporation Board of School Trustees.  The award is in recognition of efforts to restrict smoking on or around Vigo County School Corporation property or events.

 

Spotlight

 

Mr. Ronald LaRoache, Advanced Placement United States History teacher at West Vigo High School, was honored for being invited to join nearly 11,000 college faculty and AP teachers from around the world to evaluate and score about 10 million free-response answers from AP examinations.

Consent Agenda

 

Mr. Cox moved for approval of the Consent Agenda.  Ms. Patel seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

                                    purchase sports equipment – Dixie Bee PTO

 

                        c.            Dixie Bee Elementary School – Monetary Gift of $75.99 plus

                                    shipping and handling to purchase an 84 inch Dell Projection

New Business

 

Personnel Report

 

Mr. Tanoos presented the Personnel Report for approval.

 

Mr. Burks moved or approval of the Personnel Report.  Mr. Lockhart seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

Revision of Policy EH-E (Request for Disclosure of Public Records)

 

Mr. Tanoos stated that in order to be in compliance with Indiana Code 5-14-3-8 it is necessary to change our current Policy EH-E Request for Disclosure of Public Records.  He requested Board approval to change the cost for copying black and white records from $0.25 to $0.10 per page and make the cost of copying color records $0.25 per page.

 

Dr. Minnis moved for approval.  Ms. Patel seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 


Grant

 

Mr. Tanoos requested approval of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Grant.

 

Mr. Burks moved for approval.  Mr. Cox seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

Comments/Correspondence/Information

 

Second Call for Citizens Comments

 

Comments were received from Mrs. Rose Marie Scott in regard to the 4th grade class size at Dixie Bee Elementary School

 

Information and Proposals from Board Members

 

Mr. Shike requested that the administration research Teachers Contract Handbook for possible information regarding class size.

 

Dr. Minnis and Mrs. Lower wished Brendan Kearns well in his new position at Union Hospital.

 

Mr. Lockhart commented that he was very pleased with the article in Indiana Black Expo

about the Vigo County School Corporation and the increased number of African American students graduating.

 

Mr. Lockhart also commended Mr. Tanoos and staff for the hard work they do during bad weather to ensure the safety of our students.

 

Ms. Patel commented she has reviewed the resource kit prepared by the local NAACP and was impressed with the information and the work of Ann Smith, chairperson of the committee.

 

Mrs. Lower stated she would like to see Black History incorporated in the school corporation all year instead of just one month.

 

Mr. Tanoos presented an overview of meetings and programs that have taken place during the past two weeks.  He noted that due to the weather and possible flooding in some areas the school corporation is prepared to open Hoosier Prairie Elementary School for those who might need shelter.

 

Mrs. Lower announced that the last Crackerbarrel Session would be held Saturday, March 8th at the Public Library.  The meeting will begin at 10:00 A.M.
