M I N U T E S

 

 

A meeting of the Board of School Trustees of the Vigo County School Corporation was held at the Vigo County School Corporation Administration Building, 686 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, January 28, 2008 at 7:00 P.M.

 

The following Board Members were present:  Mrs. Jackie Lower, Mr. Guille Cox,

Dr. Joseph Minnis, Mr. Paul Lockhart, Ms. Alpa Patel, Mr. Mel Burks, and

Mr. Gene Shike.

 

Pledge of Allegiance

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Paul Lockhart.

 

Resolutions of Memoriam

 

Ms. Alpa Patel presented Resolutions of Memoriam for the following former employees:

 

            1.            Ms. Frances Arnett, former School Secretary at Woodrow Wilson Junior

                        High School.

 

            2.            Mrs. Bettina “Tina” Clem, former Primary Teacher and Title I Reading

                        Teacher at Meadows Elementary School.

 

Spotlight

 

Mrs. Barbara Bach, President of the Vigo County Retired Teachers’ Association, introduced Mrs. Trannie Granger, retired Vigo County School Corporation Dean and Teacher.  Mrs. Grainger was recently recognized by Lt. Governor Becky Skillman with a 2007 Senior Spotlight Award.

Consent Agenda

 

Mr. Burks moved for approval of the Consent Agenda.  Ms. Patel seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

The following Consent Agenda items were approved:

 

            1.            Minutes – Feasibility Study Meeting – January 14, 2008

            2.            Minutes – Organizational Meeting – January 14, 2008

            3.            Minutes – Regular Meeting – January 14, 2008

            4.            Accounts Payable Docket – January 28, 2008

            5.            Stipend Authorizations

            6.            Encumbrance Report for Period Ending December 31, 2007

            7.            2007 Appropriations for General, Transportation, and

New Business

 

Personnel Report

 

Dr. Goeller presented the Personnel Report to the Board for approval.

 

Mr. Lockhart moved for approval of the Personnel Report.  Mr. Cox seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

Emergency Declaration for Otter Creek Middle School

 

Dr. Goeller stated that on January 24, 2008, a significant underground leak in the heating system piping at Otter Creek Middle School was discovered.  It was noted that repair of the leak involved excavation of an area on the site that involved curbs, sidewalks, drainage piping and pavement and the estimated total cost of repairs is around $25,000.00.  Dr. Goeller reported that Mr. Bauer has determined an emergency condition exists and recommended approval of the use of Capital Projects Fund emergency line item to finance this repair.

 

Mr. Shike moved for approval.  Mr. Burks seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

English/Language Arts and Foreign Language Textbook Adoption

 

Dr. Goeller stated that for the 2007-2008 school year teachers would select textbooks and materials for English/Language Arts and Foreign Language adoption, and a district-wide committee of teachers and parents will assist in the process.  She requested that the committee members listed in the Board Packet be approved to serve.

 

Dr. Minnis moved for approval of the committee.  Mr. Burks seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

Grants

 

Dr. Goeller presented the following Grants for approval:

 

            1.            Gifted/Talented Grant – 2007-2008 School Year

            2.            Pfizer Grant – Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary School

            3.            Professional Development Schools Grant – Meadows Elementary School

            4.            Professional Development Schools Grant – Davis Park Elementary

                        School

            5.            Introduction to Building Trades Grant

            6.            Vigo County Education Foundation Grant – DeVaney Elementary

                        School

            7.            Vigo County Education Foundation Grant – Chauncey Rose Middle

                        School

 

Mr. Shike moved for approval of the Grants.  Dr. Minnis seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

Information Items

 

Swara Kopparty, Terre Haute South Vigo High School Student, has been named an Intel

Science Talent Search Semifinalist for 2008.

 

Comments/Correspondence/Information

 

Second Call for Citizens Comments

 

Mr. Bernard Ridens, Executive Director of the Vigo County Taxpayers Association, introduced his intern Mr. Sam Saha.  He also spoke about state testing.

 

Mrs. Rose Marie Scott, Mrs. Wendy Peterson, Mr. Tim Sheehan, and Mrs. Dawn McCracken spoke about 4th grade class size at Dixie Bee Elementary School.

 

Information and Proposals from Board Members and Deputy Superintendent Goeller

 

Mrs. Lower noted she was pleased about many after school classes that are available for our students.

 

Mr. Burks noted that he went to Dixie Bee and talked to Mr. Sheehan and teachers about any concern they may have regarding the fourth grade class sizes.  He said some seemed concerned at first, but not now.  Mr. Burks asked that the information given to the Board be shared with parents attending the meeting tonight.  Mr. Burks also commented that permits need to be reviewed.

 

Dr. Minnis commented that with more commerce coming into the fairgrounds and other areas, he is hopeful that school people will have a say in regard to tax abatements.

 

Mr. Lockhart complimented the recent Technology Open Houses at North, South, and West Vigo High Schools.  He also commended Chauncey Rose Middle School for increasing their attendance.

 

Mrs. Lower recommended that everyone attend the Cracker Barrel sessions.

 

Dr. Goeller presented a brief overview of curriculum highlights, which included the six month PALS report and Math Magic Saturdays.
