First Grade Buzz
First grade teachers at Dixie Bee are Mrs.
Jane Light,
Mr.
Todd Warren, Ms. Robynn Cornelison, Kristin Deady and Mrs. Barb Redman.
We love
working with children of this age and enjoy the
challenges
and rewards of teaching. Our school has high expectations and a
strong
academic program. We provide a nurturing environment with
age-appropriate
activities to challenge and meet the needs of our students.
Teaching remains
an
exciting profession for us.
We believe
that
children learn by being actively involved in their work. We read
from
a multitude of materials including quality children’s books, poetry,
and
the McGraw-Hill reading series. We use phonics as well as a
variety
of other reading strategies to decode the printed word. Your
child
is offered many opportunities to self-select good reading material,
thus
making the experience of becoming a good reader even more enjoyable and
engaging.
Many types of writing expression are explored. We write on a
daily
basis. Children keep a daily journal/learning log to share weekly
with
parents. Creative story and book writing opportunities are
provided.
Math
understanding
evolves from interaction with concrete, manipulative materials prior to
pencil
and paper computational tasks. Our year includes many experiences
with
number concepts, patterning, graphing, addition, subtraction,
fractions,
counting money, and telling time.
0pportunities
are
provided for hands-on learning and discovery using scientific
methods.
Diversity is addressed in our social studies curriculum. Students
are
actively involved in their learning by engaging in scientific
experiments
and presenting animal reports. A variety of computer activities are
also
provided.
Our first
grade
staff works together closely as a team, and we encourage parents to
become
actively involved in their children’s learning.
